Facing homelessness with two young kids: Emily’s story

Emily suffered a spinal cord injury when one of her boys was just 18 months old. When her relationship ended badly and she needed to leave, Emily found herself facing the prospect of becoming homeless with two children under four.

The rising cost of living, ongoing medical bills and skyrocketing rent put her in an impossible situation. There simply weren’t enough rental properties available in her area.

“It’s so hard living in the unknown, scared of where you are going to sleep the night. Scared of how you’re going to provide food, especially when you’re a parent. It’s very, very scary,” Emily describes.

As weeks went by and Emily couldn’t find a suitable place to live, she started to panic. The stress was overwhelming.

“My mind was racing. Will I have to buy a tent? Where are we going to sleep tonight? How am I going to handle it?”

Local services put Emily in touch with Agape Outreach Inc, one of our Community Grant recipients. The team offered her immediate support and kindness.

Support staff made calls to arrange suitable accommodation and provided meals for her and the boys. Emily was relieved that no-one judged her for being homeless.

“That made a huge difference,” she says. “Everyone was very welcoming. They had a lot of empathy, and some of the support staff had been through similar situations as well. I found it really comforting to know that.”

Emily and her boys now have temporary accommodation in a motel. “I try to make it feel like an adventure for them,” she says. “But we’re all sleeping in one room and sometimes they say, ‘Mum, where’s our kitchen? Where’s our lounge room?’ I just point around the room and say: “This is what we have right now.”

Agape has been providing Emily with food to help take the pressure off. “The food has been a major help,” she says. “It’s been handy being able to get fresh fruit and vegetables as well as meals. On weekends the boys can come and get a bacon and egg roll – they love Saturdays.”

Through the winter, Agape provided Emily with boxes of clothes for her boys as well.

Emily is slowly getting her life back on track. While the team at Agape continue to help her in her search for a permanent home, she’s making plans to study, and she’d like to do some advocacy work as well. “I’d love for the boys to have their own room one day,” she tells us. “And a backyard to play in. A friend of mine just found a house, so there’s some hope out there. I’m looking forward to the day that will happen for me and the boys.”

Right now in Australia, an extra 10,000 people become homeless every month

Many of these people aren’t sleeping on the street. They are hidden away in temporary accommodation like boarding houses or motels. They might be couch-surfing at friends’ places or staying in garages.

With your help, the Sisters of Charity Foundation is funding community groups across the country that provide vital support and compassion to people who have been pushed into homelessness.

Our community partners tell us the current housing situation is the worst they have ever seen. People who have never been homeless before are contacting them, desperate for help.

Please, make a donation this Christmas to ensure people facing homelessness receive food and shelter.
